The Archbishop of Esztergom, Antun Vrančić (1504-1573), was the first to propose the establishment of the Principality of Transylvania. In that difficult context, he understood the need to organise a new state entity that would eliminate the conflicts between the Saxons, Hungarians and Székelys and harmonise their interests. The idea run in the air. The Ottoman Empire recognised this principality as a quasi-independent state entity, its sovereignty having been accepted by several sessions of the Diet (1542-1544). The first prince of Transylvania was Ioan Sigismund, son of Queen Isabella Jagiellon.
